OSS in Cloud: Expanding the Service Provider Business Beyond Borders

To compete effectively against Over-the-Top (OTT) players, Communication Service Providers are faced with revenue generation and customer growth challenges. Surmounting these challenges requires the deployment of an agile and adaptive OSS/BSS infrastructure that caters to new business models, processes, and service delivery approaches in a cost-effective manner. What best exemplifies these challenges is the implementation of M2M, MVNx, and Wholesale Services strategies.

Through examples and cases, learn which OSS capabilities are essential for cloud-based infrastructures and how to scale these efficiently across international operations. MVNE and M2M require the highest uptimes mainly due to Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements. M2M is typically volume-intensive as well as processorintensive. In the said cases as well as in any similar wholesale operations case, the ability to differentiate SLA management and enforcement in a single international platform requires no less than a cloud-based OSS.

Registration will start from 9am onwards. Workshop will start promptly at 9.30 am and end at 5pm. There will be morning and afternoon refreshments of half hour and an hour and a half lunch break for all participants.

Workshop overview
The telecommunication infrastructure is constantly changing due to technological progress and changing application demands. This workshop will reflect the recent platform developments in the field of fixed and mobile Next Generation Networks (NGNs) towards a future internet environment, which should enable emerging smart city applications. In this regard the workshop will look on the convergence of network and service concepts and the related evolution of NGN standards and Service Delivery Platform (SDP) APIs and put them into a common context. Finally, service examples will be given by looking at the Fraunhofer FOKUS FUSECO Playground and the related testbed toolkits, which are deployed a various international network operator labs for early prototyping of innovative smart city applications.

Workshop Objectives
Participants will obtain a comprehensive overview of existing and upcoming fixed and mobile network signaling and service control platforms, such as IN, SIP, Diameter, IMS, RCS, LTE, EPC, VoLTE, MTC, M2M, SDPs, GSM ONE, OMA NGSI, WAC, Open flow, network virtualisation, cloud technologies, etc. The experienced trainer will based on his deep technical knowhow and didactical skills explain the motivations, principles, architectures, as well as applications of each of the key technologies and will set them into an overall context. The audience will understand the evolution and convergence of networks to seamless service environments and come to know the changing value chain of world of interconnected things and people.

Target Audience
The workshop is targeted for managers, sales persons as well as engineers from network operators, equipment providers and application developers, who need to refresh their knowhow and / or are new to the field of converging networks.

About Your Workshop Leader

Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz
Director of NGNI Competence Center
Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS

Thomas Magedanz (PhD) is full professor in the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, leading the chair for next generation networks (www.av.tu-berlin.de) since 2003. In addition, he is director of the next generation network infrastructure competence center of the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS (www.fokus.fraunhofer.de/go/ngni).  Since more than 20 years Prof. Magedanz is performing research on middleware and distributed service platforms for converging networks, fixed and mobile next generation networks and the future internet, leading to the development of service oriented technology test beds and related open source tools. The most popular ones include the Open Source IMS Core (www.openimscore.org) and the Open IMS Playground (www.open-ims.org) established in 2004. In 2007 he opened the new Open SOA Telco Playground (www.opensoaplayground.org) for IMS/Web2.0/SOA service prototyping on top of NGNs and legacy circuit switched telecom networks. In spring 2010, he opened the Future Seamless Communication Playground (www.FUSECO-playground.org) based on the new FOKUS Open Evolved Packet Core software toolkit (www.OpenEPC.net) in order to enable applied research on IP core network evolution and seamless mobility support in multi access wireless network environments. In 2011, he entered with his team also into the machine 2 machine (M2M) communications domain by developing the Open Machine Type Communications software toolkit (www.openMTC.org). In addition to all this, Prof. Magedanz is investigating the evolution of Next Generation Networks towards the Future Internet (NGN2FI.org). Currently he is investigating the provision of a flexible ICT infrastructure for emerging Smart Cities. In the course of his research activities he published more than 250 technical papers/articles. In addition, Prof Magedanz is senior member of the IEEE, and editorial board member of several journals.
